Susanna Carlisle studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. After many years designing architectural projects and sculpture, she met new media pioneers Steina and Woody Vasulka and fell down the rabbit hole into video. Since her background has been in the visual arts, her video work is influenced more by painting, sculpture and architecture than by the moving image.

In 1998 Susanna worked with Vasulka, designing spaces and creating sculptural elements for his exhibition of six interactive media installations, The Brotherhood, at ICC in Tokyo. She has collaborated (and continues to collaborate) with composer and extended vocal techniques artist Joan La Barbara to create video images for performances, choreographer and dancer Mary Anne Santos Newhall to develop experimental dance videos, and media artist Bruce Hamilton to explore immersive interactive environments.

Her work has been exhibited in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, and Australia. She has received grants from the New Mexico Arts Division in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts and a 1% Percent for Art Project.

Artistic Statement

My video work seeks to portray the body in motion as a repository of human experience. Encoded within the structures of bones, muscles, and cells are messages of physical response to intellectual and emotional evolution. By using tools of technology, I am attempting to make the inner state visible - to reveal it in its raw, vulnerable, subjective states of being. The video eye and computer serve as interpreters to redefine and highlight this inner vista, perhaps giving dance a new face.
